154 – From Miscarriage to Maternal Health Advocate with Kia Livingston

Erica Michelle

From miscarriage to maternal health advocate and becoming a doula. Today’s guest shares how she suffered from depression and anxiety after having a miscarriage at 14 weeks.

Kia Livingston had to lean on God and her support system to get out of a very dark place after suffering a miscarriage at 14 weeks. She turned her pain into purpose and became a doula and maternal health advocate. In this episode she takes us back on her journey to motherhood, how she overcame depression after her loss, and how her work as a doula is helping her advocate for black maternal health.

Kia Livingston’s Bio
My name is Kia and I’m a new doula residing in Philadelphia!

Tell me about your journey to motherhood? What obstacles have you overcome?

In July 2019 I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks! I suffered a bad depression and had major anxiety. I had to lean on God and my support system hard to come out of this dark place. Although it wasn’t that long ago, the Divine moved quick, my journey went in a direction I was not expecting. After all that pain, I prayed and prayed and one day God told me that it was time to use that pain and do his work, and become a doula. I am now working to become a doula and womb healer. After my calling was placed upon me, two weeks later my younger sister went into labor (yes we were pregnant at the same time, due dates 2 weeks apart) and I was her doula. And it was the most beautiful experience of my life. My story is unique, hopefully encouraging, and I would love to be a light for someone who may have suffered the way did and hear the beauty that can come of those challenges.
