October is here and it is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Join us all month long as we honor and celebrate our babies who have gone to heaven far too soon.
Negligence. Unfair Treatment due to Systemic Racism. Killing of a Premature Baby. All of the words and sayings that come to mind when I think of today’s guest. Aubri Cabness delivered her son Sebastien prematurely and 3 days later in the NICU his health started to decline. He was left off oxygen for 24 hours after being born at 1lb and 13oz. His trachea was punctured, lungs lacerated, and esophagus perforated. He died of sepsis in his mother’s arms due to the NICU negligence. In this episode Aubri takes us back on that journey to her recovery, how her story is now connecting other moms who experienced the same trauma at the same hospital, and what justice looks like for her to grieve and heal. This episode is for you to listen to if you have ever experienced racial bias and trauma in the medical system.

Description of Who you Are (Short Bio)
My 3 day old son, Sebastién Marcos, was intentionally killed by the staff in the NICU at Washington Hospital Center. After forgetting to intubate my 1lb 13oz newborn for 24 hours, they then punctured his trachea, lacerated his lungs twice and perforated his esophagus. Then instead of rushing him next door to the nation’s top pediatric facility, they tried to hide his injuries and instead let him choke on his own blood for 13.5 hours. This led to sepsis (blood poisoning), pneumonia, and a collapsed left lung. He died in my arms the next day.
They had paralyzed me by having an unsupervised resident to administer my epidural and he nicked my spine, causing spinal fluid to leak. I was unable to walk or hold my head up. This is the only reason I wasn’t constantly in the NICU w/ Sebastién.
They released me with No baby, no explanation and denied me a meeting for 6 months. At the 6 month mark, they admitted to all the above on tape. (Despite my pics, the tape, etc, no DC lawyers would take the case.)
To this day, the hospital has never released my baby’s full records to me.
