117 – Recurrent Miscarriages and Male Factory Infertility with Tamika Henderson

Erica Michelle

October is here and it is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. Join us all month long as we honor and celebrate our babies who have gone to heaven far too soon.

Have you heard of male factor infertility? Male Factor infertility can be caused due to low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices, and other factors that lead to infertility. Today’s guest shares her recurrent miscarriage story and journey where her husband is experiencing secondary infertility by way of male factor. Tamika Henderson had miscarriages in 2016, 2017, and 2018, and it became so routine she knew she was miscarrying. After consulting with a fertility doctor she found out her fertility was due to male factor which was shocking because her husband already had two children. In this episode she takes us back on that journey to healing, and her next steps in her fertility treatments. This episode is for you to listen to if you have never heard of male factor fertility and how it effects a marriage.

Tamika Henderson’s Bio

I am a 38 year old married African American woman on a journey through faith and fertility.

Tell me about your journey to motherhood? What obstacles have you overcome?

I lost my virginity at 17 to a man that I married a year later at 18. Not once did I get pregnant after being in that marriage and it ending in a divorce. Two years later I remarried and got pregnant for the first time in July 2016 and lost the pregnancy before I even knew that I was pregnant. The blood test was positive, the numbers were good, but by the time the first sonogram there was no heartbeat. I would then have another pregnancy loss 6 months later in January 2017. This one was a week after finding out. A year after that in January 2018 the pregnancy test read positive on a Friday, but Sunday I was miscarriging. By the last miscarriage in May of 2018, I had become a pro at what was going on. I knew what was happening and did not seek medical attention. After our second miscarriage I reached out to a fertility specialist. We did testing and found that it was a male factor although my husband already has two children. This year we started fertility treatment. We are scheduled to do egg retrieval at the end of March.

Any books, tools, resources that have helped you on this journey that you want to share with the audience?

The Bible has been a comfort during this time. Just knowing that we are not alone and that infertility is not new. But what I did notice is that none were left barren. That is what I hold on to. The TTC Community has also been a huge help during these times. Infertility and miscarriages are unheard of until you actually experience it and you feel like OMG how could this happen. Then out of no where ppl open up and say “Oh, I had a miscarriage before I had little Josie” But WHO KNEW?! it’s the silent suffering that kills.
